3 Steps to Take Control of Your Life

Dec 4, 2017 | Lifestyle Development

Most people grew up being taught that attending college, graduating with a degree and finding a job in a field we love will put us on a path to success. In other words, the world teaches us to pick something we want to do, and hopefully, it leads to the life we want to live.

Unfortunately, when a person starts a new job or career, it comes with a lot of things that are out of their control. For instance, in most cases, you can’t pick your boss or co-workers, you can’t choose your salary, and you can’t set your own hours. Many people find that their work can start to define their lifestyle, and their choices are compromised from the get-go when they have been hired to build someone else’s company and dream.

However, if you change the way you think about building your future, you have the ability to change the outcome because when you have the end in mind, the beginning changes. If you decide from the beginning to pour into a business that allows you to seek perspective and coaching from people that have the results you want, you have a much better chance of getting where you want to go. You get to choose who your biggest influencers are… So make sure to choose wisely.

However, you have to define the lifestyle you want to have in specific terms, and then go after whatever it takes to get there. Here are three tips you should follow to live the lifestyle of your dreams and take control of your life.

Define the lifestyle you want to have

Instead of deciding a specific business or job to start, consider how you want to live. Then, develop a game plan that can make this lifestyle possible. One of the best ways to establish a clear definition of the lifestyle you want is to make a list of ten things you would do for yourself and ten things you would do for others once your life reaches a point where it isn’t limited by time or money. In doing so, you will have a better understanding of exactly what your lifestyle will look like.

Find a path that leads you to the life you want to live

Do your research and explore your options. Find a pathway that fills your life with passion, values, and purpose and provides an avenue to give you the resources to build the life you dream of.

Adopt a teachable attitude

Be open to learning from your mistakes and others’ advice and experiences. Maintaining an open and teachable mindset has the ability to completely transform your life because you are open to learning new things in every circumstance. You can only achieve the life of your dreams if you’re constantly ready to listen and learn.

If this all makes sense to you, what are you going to do about it? It’s time to take control of your life! Despite what the world teaches us, you are in charge of your destiny, so why not go big? Your future is up to you––all you have to do is reach out and grab it!

This thinking radically changed my perspective. I went the traditional route – go to school, get a good job, etc – and realized that I settled for whatever life that job gave me. Now, 25+ years later, upon hearing this perspective, I am redefining my future, deciding how I want to live, even at my age. It’s never too late and you’re never too old to take control over your future.

This is a great article, and the above is such an impactful statement. You will either proactively choose, or deciding not to choose is still a choice. Thank you for posting.

I love this article! Your explanation of what life should look like, instead of what we are taught our lives should look like is inspiring and mind blowing! As I learn to adapt to this frame of mindset, so will my children. To give them a better chance at attaining thier lifestyle for themselves and future children.

Listen Up!

A wise man once told me, “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason. It’s because you should listen twice as much as you talk”. What does it mean to listen? And I mean really listen. It’s much more than simply hearing. It means to actually take mental notes of...
